When Leonidas was in charge of guarding the narrow mountain pass at Thermopylae with just 7,000 Greek men in order to delay the invading Persian army, Xerxes offered to spare his men if they gave up their arms. Leonidas replied:

“Come and take them.”

When he was asked why he had come to fight such a huge host with so few men, Leonidas answered:

“I have plenty, since they are all to be slain.”

On the morning of the third and final day of the battle, Leonidas, knowing they were being surrounded, exhorted his men:

“Eat well, for tonight we dine in Hades.”

The Spartan was told that the Persian archers were so numerous that when they shot their volleys, their arrows would blot out the sun. He responded with:

“So much the better, we’ll fight in the shade.”

After invading Greece and receiving the submission of other key city-states, Philip II of Macedon sent a message to Sparta: “If I invade Laconia you will be destroyed, never to rise again.” The Spartan replied with a single word:


Subsequently neither Philip II nor his son Alexander the Great attempted to capture the city.

While discussing his free agency during an interview Wednesday on NFL Network, former Florida Gators linebacker Brandon Spikes did not parse words when asked whether quarterback Tim Tebow would succeed if given another chance in the NFL.

“I love Tim Tebow. I love Tim Tebow. He’s a great person, and I think he’s a great quarterback. He gets the job done, and at the end of the day, he wins,” Spikes said. “Given the opportunity, I think he’ll go out there and perform.

“I’ve already set my watch: it’s Tebow time.”
